Living in Windermere or Lake Butler while leading a business elsewhere

By Dalton Young · Horizon West Founders

The place you call home and the place your business operates don't have to be the same. If you live in Windermere or around Lake Butler while leading a team elsewhere, the useful question isn't whether your company is local. It's how to remain a responsible owner without being the answer to every question, in every time zone.

Separate availability from responsibility

Being reachable all the time can look like commitment. It can also hide unclear decision rights. If routine questions continually come back to you, look at what the team is allowed to decide and what information they need to make those decisions.

Try reviewing a recent week of messages. Which issues genuinely needed your judgment? Which arrived because approval was never delegated, expectations were unclear, or someone lacked context? The aim isn't to disappear. It's to distinguish essential owner work from avoidable interruptions.

Give a distributed team a clearer operating rhythm

A remote team can benefit from agreed expectations about what needs a meeting, what can be documented and what counts as urgent. These are business-specific choices, not a universal schedule. Your customers, industry and existing obligations should shape them.

Consider who makes decisions while you're unavailable and how you hear about exceptions. If everything waits for your reply, another meeting may not solve the underlying problem. Clear responsibilities and a sensible escalation path are a better starting point.

Find perspective outside the company

Employees have their own responsibilities and incentives. Friends may care about you without understanding what ownership asks of you. An outside advisory relationship can provide a different place to discuss uncertainty, competing priorities and the effect business decisions have on life.

A shared connection to Windermere or the Lake Butler area can make that relationship feel more human, without requiring your company to serve local customers. Most communication with me can be remote; occasional coffee or walks are by mutual agreement.

A few questions to take into the week

Use these as prompts, not as instructions to make changes before you've considered the consequences.

  • What breaks when I'm unavailable, and why?
  • Who already has the judgment to own a decision but not the authority?
  • Where am I confusing being informed with having to approve?
  • What do I want living here to make room for beyond work?

The perspective I bring

You don't need a nearby company headquarters to have a local advisory relationship. The fit is about you, your responsibilities and the perspective you want—not your business's mailing address.
